Digital Transformation and sustainable Development in Higher Education institutions opportunities and challenges

Abstract

In a knowledge-based and technology-driven world, universities and colleges have been defined as strategic targets for digital transformation, due to the impact of such transformation on their ability to enhance academic excellence, institutional resistance to shocks and stresses, and sustainable development (UNESCO, 2021; Bond et al., 2018). Digital technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, learning management systems, Big Data Analytics, and Digital Pedagogies have revolutionised the way Universities educate, research, govern, and engage with stakeholders. Meanwhile, higher education institutions are facing increasing demands to play a role in achieving the sustainable development goals by fostering inclusive education, environmental responsibility and social equity and innovation (United Nations, 2015). The digital transformation and sustainability agenda are beginning to merge but there is limited conceptual understanding on how digital innovation can be effectively used to support sustainable development while considering institutional, technological and ethical challenges. This study aims at exploring how the digital transformation of higher education can contribute to sustainable development and what opportunities and challenges lie there and how to build a conceptual understanding of the implications of the digital transformation for sustainable development. The study utilizes a qualitative research design that adopts a mix of the following research methods: integrative literature review, thematic analysis, conceptual synthesis and document analysis of scholarly publications, institutional reports and policy documents. The findings show that digital transformation offers great potential to increase access to education, increase institutional efficiency, promote innovation, implement sustainable resource management and support international collaboration. There are still, however, many challenges, including digital inequality, poor technology infrastructure, resistance to change in the organisation, cyber security problems, financial limitations and varying digital competencies among stakeholders. In theory, the study contributes to the digital transformation and sustainability scholarship and would benefit those university leaders and policy makers who are engaged in making higher education institutions resilient and sustainable. It is necessary for strategic leadership, inclusive digital policies and a human-centred approach to ensure that digital transformation can be aligned with sustainable development, in which technological progress can contribute meaningfully to the sustainability of education, society and the environment in the long term.
