Exploring the Sensitivity & Violence Portrayed in 13 Reasons Why? and Its Impact on Viewers

Abstract

This research discusses the portrayal of sensitivity and violence in the 13 Reasons Why season 1 and analyzes it’s psychological and emotional effect on the viewers by applying the George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory. In this research a mixed-methods approach has been used. For qualitative content analysis scenes that were considered sensitive and violent has been selected, and for quantitative analysis, viewers’ reviews and a keyword-frequency analysis with the help of “AntConc” software, has also been performed. The results show that repeated exposure to graphic visuals of sensitive themes such as bullying, assault and suicide triggers the spectators to experience phobia, trauma and psychological issues. The show has dual nature that has performed its role in both ways; becoming an inspiration for mental health awareness as well as portraying the risks of sensitive media graphics. This study finds that as the modern age is getting advanced in digital streaming era, therefore graphic visuals are highly effective in shaping the perception if viewers, as they cultivate such media.
