This study re-examined the issue of semantic loss in the English translations of some selected verses from Surah Yā-Sīn by Abdullah Yusuf Ali and Arthur John Arberry. It focused on the lexicon, grammar, pronouns, tense, modalities, and contextual meanings in the verses under consideration which included verses 2, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 55-57, and 66. Qualitative comparative analysis was done in line with Baker’s concept of equivalence. This involved analyzing the Arabic verses, their English translations, and the lexicon and exegetical material related to them. The results indicated that in most cases, the differences in the translations were acceptable variations in the process of translation, restructuring of the grammar or explicitation but not semantic loss. Yusuf Ali’s version was more explanatory while Arberry’s was comparatively conciseness in translation of source. Semantic loss only occurred due to the limitation in the selection of lexicon that led to contextual meaning reduction.
